A brief history
1895
Creation of the Plouvier company
The Plouvier inland waterways activities originated when Prosper Plouvier senior invested in several barges. At the beginning of the 20th century branches in Germany and Holland were founded and managed by Prosper junior and Desiré Plouvier. By the outbreak of World War 1 the Plouvier Group was well established and owned a considerable number of barges.
1918 - 1950
After World War I
The group soon recovered its elan profiting from the
reconstruction of Western Europe. When Prosper Plouvier senior died in 1936, his two children Prosper junior and Desiré took over the business.
1950 - 1965
After the 2nd World war
The Plouvier organization developed rapidly peaking around 500-600 privately owned barges. Further steps were taken to invest in sea-going vessels when several ships with approx. 16t gross tonnage were built.
1974
By the time of the first oil crisis
At the time of the oil crisis a large part of the fleet was reduced and sold. A number of large tankers remaining in possession of the company limited inland shipping activities to Plouvier Transport in Antwerp and VOLA Transport Company in Rotterdam. Chartering became main core.
1990
During the 90’s
Plouvier invested in 4 large inland tank barges each with a loading capacity of 3000 or more tons. This was the beginning of the Plouvier Transport era which is still a renowned broker in inland tanker chartering today.
1995 to 2022
In the present days
After the takeover of several chartering companies (EICC, Swintank, Intertrans Tankschiffahrt and Verol Chartering) Plouvier fulfilled its intentions to continue playing a major role in international tanker chartering by investing in new double-hulled ships operating
under own management as well as in cooperation with private owners
